1257 Westwood Street, Redwood City, CA
Exterior, Gardens and Patios
The exterior siding of the home is made of redwood, including all the window and door trim. The facia boards just below the roof are made of an exterior grade treated pine. The home has a 50 year Elk composition shingle roof, and galvanized steel rain gutters that all tie into a drainage system that drains out to the street, rather than right near the foundation of the house. The windows are Anderson clad wood casement windows, except the two in the garage, which are milgard sliding windows.
For enjoyment of Redwood City's beautiful weather, there is a spacious covered front porch and a large rear patio, both finished off with beautiful slate tiles. Additionally, off the den upstairs is another large outdoor space with a view of the hills looking towards Portola Valley.
With the exception of several mature trees in the back garden, the exterior features of the home are all new. There are stepping stones all around the home, made of arizona flagstone. Large flagstones set in sand in the grass provide a way to walk to the front door. The front porch is finished with a complementary slate tile. The rear patio is quite large, approximately 16 x 21, and it is covered in a colorful slate different then that of the porch. Completing the area around the rear patio is a cheerful fountain. The fountain features reuse -- the basin it sits in is the old bathtub, and the covering is of leftover slate and flagstone.
All the planters and grass areas have been tilled with a generous amount of organic fertalizer, to help augment the less then ideal soil the neighborhood has. There is ample grass for playing front and rear. To keep everything watered, there are automatic sprinkers for the grass, and automatic drip lines through all the planting beds. There are beautiful perenials and annuals around the garden. Finally, there is a large shed (this pre-exists the new home) for storing your lawnmower and other garden tools.
